Bringing Value to Your Portfolio  Companies

With Venture Capital investing, just as in the case of any other investment, the main thing is being able to put in a certain value. An important piece to the puzzle, when you're investing in any company is what value can you bring to the table?

If I can't bring any value to the company, no matter how great the company is, I wouldn't invest in it if there's nothing I will be able to do if something goes wrong. Invest in something that you can make more valuable.

Let’s talk about investing on the government level. I'll give you an example of how we invested in a company and then directly brought value-add. We invested in a company with an amazing education platform, extensive experience, and a very smart team. But when it comes to the government or public sector, the sales cycle is always way too long. So what did we do? After we invested, we introduced the company to Santa Ana Unified, which is the largest school district in Orange County. We knew people within the district and that there was a need for a particular product. And, of course, we were sure that the company that we invested in had the ability to fill that need. We made the introduction, and three months later the company had the contract with the largest school district in Orange county.

That's an example of how we were able to bring value to the company that we invested in.
