Managing Portfolio Companies

We're not managers, we're board-leveled, but we're doing everything we can to get connected to the right network, to give opportunities to our portfolio companies. An example of that is the way we structured our fund. We have limited partners of a variety of types, but 13 of the investors in the fund are insurance carriers. When they sign on, we will not only do our best to give them a financial return but will also try to educate them on what the opportunities are in the space, on really interesting companies that they might want to partner with, do the proof of concept with and engage in on a long lasting basis.

That network is really valuable to companies that we invest in, as we can immediately introduce them to insurance carriers who can use their services. We've got a big network outside of just those insurance carriers that help them be successful, to raise the next round, etc. We had three companies that were doing quite well, but they were just ready to go in the market to fund the next round of growth when Covid hit, and we were able to step in and bring a group together around us to extend the runway by 12 to 18 months so they didn't have to worry and stay focused on their business.
